The Hannon family lost several members in a 1776 attack beside the North Pacolet River, according to a regional history published in 1897. The story has been retold often enough that some added details now pass for fact. One concerns the children who lived. The early account names Edwin, Winnie, and infant William. A prior version of our North Pacolet news article named a baby sister, Elizabeth, instead; we corrected it in September 2026. The older source gives us a reason to correct that account, though it cannot settle every detail of a tragedy recorded long after it occurred. John Belton O'Neall Landrum set down the story in . He called it a traditional account. That matters: Landrum was preserving what people in the area remembered more than a century after 1776. He was not quoting an eyewitness record from the day of the attack.
