What happens when scarcity moves from the body to the spirit? In this episode, we trace the history of the Wendigo Complex, a cluster of Northern Algonquian narratives tied to winter hunger and social breakdown. We dig into the earliest paper trails, including Hudson’s Bay Company journals from the 1700s, to see how outsiders first recorded these "cannibal monster" stories.
The heart of the episode examines the tragic 1879 trial of Swift Runner, a man whose desperate actions during a famine became a permanent mark in colonial records. Finally, we confront how modern pop culture—from horror films to video games—often flattens these deep moral teachings into simple tropes, ignoring the human side and the vital importance of reciprocity.
