The agents were watching east when the radio call came from another observation post. Someone looking west had picked up an object on thermal equipment. Two federal agents moved across their post to see it for themselves, leaving a tripod-mounted thermal system behind because the terrain made it difficult to move quickly.
According to an AARO debrief released on October 23, they watched a dark triangle rise above a ridge, hover and bank into a canyon. They reported no sound. The memo gives them about ten seconds to watch the ascent, twenty seconds for the hover and another two or three before the object disappeared behind terrain.
The FBI's account gives approximately three seconds for the entire sighting. Both records describe a closely matching encounter, yet they leave very different impressions of how long the agents had to study what they saw.
A shape against the dusk sky
The three-page AARO memorandum, DOW-UAP-D176, places the observation at late dusk. The sun was below the horizon, with enough light remaining behind the western ridges to make a silhouette visible. After the third observer called out the contact, one of the agents took binoculars and a handheld thermal monocular to get a westward view.
Their description was specific: a matte-black triangle with no visible windows, rotors or exhaust. They estimated its wingspan at thirteen to fifteen feet and placed it roughly 200 to 300 feet above the ridgeline during the hover. The account describes observation with both the naked eye and infrared equipment.
AARO opens the memo with a caution about how to read those details. They reflect the witnesses' interpretations and do not conclusively establish the object's features or performance. Even an accurate description of its appearance would leave questions about distance and resolution, as well as the time available to observe it.
The Pentagon made these records public in its October 23, 2026 UAP release. The encounter took place earlier in 2026. The precise event date and identifying details are redacted, so the release should not be mistaken for a sighting that happened this weekend.
Thirty seconds or three?
The FBI record, FBI-UAP-D043, reproduces a written statement co-signed by two special agents. After an alert from another post, they described a nonreflective black triangle resembling a delta-wing drone. One watched through a handheld thermal device while the other followed it unaided.
Their statement describes the vertical climb, a transition to horizontal flight and a descent toward terrain. On the second page, it gives the total duration as approximately three seconds. In AARO's longer sequence, two to three seconds covers only the final maneuver, after the rise and hover.
The clock times differ too. The FBI statement gives approximately 1923; AARO gives 2023L. A recording error or a difference in which portion of the observation each account describes could explain some of this, but neither explanation is established by the released text.
Someone watching for thirty seconds has more time to judge a shape and follow its movement than someone who catches a three-second glimpse. The chronology needs resolving before these descriptions can support calculations of extraordinary performance.
Reading the records together helps expose the discrepancy. It also shows why they should be treated as overlapping accounts of a closely matching event. They do not provide two independent confirmations of every estimate.
What the thermal view tells us
The thermal observation gives investigators more to examine than a report of a distant light, although the memo does not supply a calibrated flight track. It describes a roughly uniform thermal appearance with no visible exhaust. That observation alone cannot establish whether the object had conventional propulsion.
The witnesses compared its speed with a fighter jet, estimating its movement against the terrain. AARO says no instrumented speed measurement was obtained. The comparison therefore leaves its actual speed and acceleration unmeasured, and tells us little about how it was propelled.
The account follows the object as far as the canyon. It disappeared behind terrain; the memo records no observed impact. A ground survey the following morning reportedly found no wreckage, ground scarring or vegetation damage. There is no recovered craft documented in the record.
An original sensor recording tied to a consistent timeline would help test the witnesses' descriptions. Investigators would also need enough information to check distance and scale against known activity in the area. The released accounts leave the object's identity open.
The earlier triangle reports
Black triangles have appeared in reports involving police witnesses and suspected stealth aircraft for decades. Those cases have also produced uncertain distance estimates and images that look more definite than the testimony behind them. A familiar outline offers little help in identifying this encounter on its own.
Our Unexplained History episode, Black Triangles: Strange Reports From a Dark Sky, follows earlier cases through Bagram, the Hudson Valley, Belgium, Phoenix and Illinois. It compares what people remembered seeing with the records and measurements available for each case.
The episode was recorded before the October 23 release, so it covers the history behind these reports rather than the new files. If the triangle's familiar shape makes this encounter seem part of a larger pattern, listen to how differently those earlier cases turn out when their evidence is examined.
